Regular visitors to Art 3 Gallery are always amazed at the variety of style and medium we display on our walls. We represent over 150 artists, and each artist brings a creative and unique perspective to their art. Because of this wide ranging inventory, we have maintained our idea of featuring as many artist as possible in our shows. No featured artist,no one style or type. Our shows are theme based, giving the artist the opportunity to interpret the theme as it resonates with them.
So how do we hang these shows?? Curious minds want to know--so thorugh the next week or so, we'll show you how we make our walls flow!

Open House!

Join us on Wednesday February 9 for our winter Open House from 11:00-4:00. Art openings in NH on a winter night can be risky (snow, sleet, cold) so we decided a daytime event would be fun--for us and our guests! We are here surrounded by wonderful artwork and have re-hung the gallery with an assortment of pieces with a red/pink theme for Valentine's Day. This allows us to freshen the walls and gives our customers an opportunity for a reprieve from looking at all the white landscape.

Pat Gerkin’s works explore both the exterior and the interior landscape. She is interested in surface tension and the place between 2-D and 3-D, and she works primarily on canvas and/or wood, in acrylics and mixed media (including encaustics). Many of her assemblages make use of crushed metal, tiles, roofing, and other discarded materials. Her most recent works investigate the complexity/simplicity of the patterns and textures found in nature.

We welcome Carol Keiser to Art 3 Gallery this week. Carol Keisers paintings have been inspired by the time she has spent exploring the lush landscapes of Mexico, Costa Rica, Italy and the American Southwest.

Using rich colors of layered paint she captures the unique light of the countryside. Carols sense of humor and joie de vivre are also evident in her work.

In addition to painting on canvas, Carol Kaiser creates hand-painted, kiln-fired tiles and murals that can be used to create unique fireplace surrounds, table tops, kitchen backsplashes and bathroom surrounds.

We had perfect weather for the opening reception of "Splash!"
The wonderful artwork was enhanced by the lovely sounds of Tom Pirozzoli and his magical guitar! And we were pleasantly surprised by huge crowd! Over 200 visitors came through the door to enjoy this first for Open Doors Manchester and for Art 3 Gallery--a summer reception. Perhaps a summer gathering is not a bad idea...
Anyway, the show is fabulous, and will be up until September, so come on in and visit!

Colorful Oboes

We love a challenge and when a Concord,NH law firm needed a creative idea to an empty curved wall, we found a wonderful solution. The firm has a varied collection of paintings and were looking for something with additional dimension and color to add to their reception area. These textural pieces are called "Oboes" and are the perfect addition to this corporate space. This midwestern artist uses a variety of fibers and colors to create unusual dimension for unusual spaces, using soft, luxurious fiber in a symphony of color. Works beautifully, don't you think?!

July first already!! Days are winding down for "The Light Fantastic" which will come down next week. We are very excited with all the new work coming in daily for our summer show "Splash!". The show will be on display from July 19-September 24.
Plan on joining us on Thursday July 22 from 5:00-8:00 for an artists reception.
We have a great evening planned--unveiling the new artwork and music by Tom Pirozzoli.Tom is a talented guitarist with a highly original take on popular, jazz, classical and folk music. Mary Graham/Karin Wells

Great article in Monadnock Living magazine that features two of our artists, Mary Graham and Karin Wells. We feel privileged to represent these two wonderful painters, whose pieces always amaze us.
Mary's landscapes represent an interplay of imagination and reality, and are very contemplative and inviting.
Karin's portraits are reminescent of the Old Masters, and are done by commission. Karin's still lifes feature a wonderful luminescence, and evoke an old world feeling.
We have a variety of pieces by both artists here at Art 3 just waiting for you!

The Light Fantastic
On display at Art 3 Gallery from April 26-July 9.

Painters strive to keep their work fresh and exciting by changing perspective, exploring new techniques and adapting the lighting of a composition. Creating new parameters for light, color and structure, the painter becomes the master of light and shadow.

“The Light Fantastic” includes artwork from more than 85 artists that convey images that portray the shadows, illusions and shapes that captivate us — the golden hours of dusk and dawn, the warmth of candlelit tables, shadows that capture the imagination. Through the use of colors and layers, artists have created paintings that evoke atmosphere and define what we see around us. The show includes representational and abstract work that captures the essence of light.

An opening and artists’ reception will be held Thursday, April 29 from 5:00-8:00, in conjunction with Open Doors Manchester. Visit the show, ride the trolley and register to win four Fisher Cats tickets!

Art 3 Gallery presents their winter show “Pairs and Pears”, on display March 1-April 9.
The pear has remained a constant source of inspiration to artists throughout the ages and Art 3 is celebrating the wonder of this sensual shape. “This graceful fruit is often overlooked, even by chefs!” according to Lee Forgosh of Art 3. Influenced by the elegance of its form, the show includes many still life paintings of pears, from abstracted imagery to the more formal and traditional and each painting exudes its own strong presence. “This simple fruit has a unique shape, and its lines and curves can even suggest the human figure,” continues Forgosh.

“To add variety to the show, we decided to have some fun with the title and the artwork, including a variety of “Pairs” in this show,” says Joni Taube of Art 3. The play on words inspired several artists to submit unique pairs, from “Koi and Lotus” by Dustan Knight to “Insight”, a series of captivating eyes by Andrea Sawyer. Included in the show are several groupings of two small pieces by the same artist and paintings featuring pairs of every sort.

An opening and artist’s reception for “Pairs and Pears” will be held on Thursday, March 4 from 11:00-2:00 at Art 3 Gallery, 44 West Brook Street in Manchester.
The show is on display until April 9 during regular gallery hours Monday-Friday 9:00-4:00. Evening and week-end appointments are always welcome.

Bathroom Art

Winter is an opportune time for renovations and sounds like many of you are taking on bathroom projects! Any type of artwork can enhance a bathroom with no shower. Steam and humidity in your private or guest bath have to be considered when decidng on the type of artwork to hang. Mildew and mold are always an issue in a bathroom with a shower. A general rule of thumb is to avoid anything on paper. Oil and acrylics will work if done on masonite or a board. Dimensional pieces such as ceramic, glass, amd metals are great options to finish the space. If you need suggestions or another set of eyes, give us a call!

Now that the holiday season is over and we spend more time indoors enjoying(!)the winter season, you might want to make some simple changes to perk up your living space. One easy way to transform your space is to move artwork from room to room. The large landscape over your fireplace might look perfect over the den sofa. The two small pieces over the dining room buffet might work in a bedroom. Try different pairings at different times of the day, and notice how the light affects the artwork and the room. Don't be afraid to ask for help! Joni and Lee have years of experience assisting customers with these type of dilemmas. You may decide you have room for a new piece of art!
Several of the designers we work with have noticed a trend in using yellow and green. Yellow can add a vibrancy to a room and supposedly can even aid in digestion in a kitchen or dining area. Successful "Treasures" Hunt

"Treasures", the latest show to open at Art 3, was a rousing success. Many more people came than were expected and we even finished the brie. Last night we collected canned goods for our neighbors, the NH Food Bank. A percentage of last night's sales also were donated, so they should expect a nice check from us next week. We raffled a gift basket from Angela's Pasta and Cheese Shop here in Manchester and the lucky winners are the Bennetts from Londonderry. Come and visit the gallery during our regular hours of Monday through Friday, 8:30 to 5-ish. Lots of gift items are stacked up ready for the holiday season. The exhibit has works by over 100 artists including several new artists here for the first time.

Moving Up, With a Bull-It

Lee Forgosh of Art 3 Gallery has facilitated the creation of a memorial sculpture recently erected at the east end of the "Hands Across the Merrimack Bridge" in Manchester, NH. Constructed of tig-welded quarter-inch thick bronze racks and plates by well-known sculptor Chris Williams of Essex, MA, the bull weighs one ton and is visible from Route 293, especially when the sun shines. According to a press release from the Alex Shapiro Charitable Trust, the bull was installed "to commemorate Manchester's entrepreneurial tradition as exemplified by the founders and employees of Granite State Packing Company and Jac Pac Foods."

We missed you. The opening for "Diversions" was well attended, but we missed your happy face. The weather was beautiful and many new people came out to visit the cultural sights and places around Manchester. Well over 100 people came to see the new exhibit. Several artists were also in attendance and were happy to talk about their work. This show is open until June 12th. The next reception will be for "On the Water's Edge" on June 25th. Diversions

The new exhibit at Art 3 Gallery entitled "Diversions" opens on April 6th with a reception on Thursday, April 16th from 5-8 p.m. in conjunction with Manchester Open Doors. With "Diversions", our new exhibit opening on April 6, we have added some new artists to our lineup and many of our current exhibitors have brought in new work. The following artists have all had their pages updated with new paintings at Art 3 Gallery : Ken Fiery, Cheri Dennett, JoAnne Lussier, Marilene Sawaf, Gail Sauter, Dennis Perris, Stan Moeller, Mary Graham, Ann Legg, Lisa Occhipinti, Tim Craig, and Felicia Hannick. More new work is arriving daily.
We would like to welcome Tatiana Sink to Art 3. She is a wonderful artist able to impart movement to a stationary canvas.
Four times a year we open the gallery for a themed-based exhibit, utilizing artwork from as many of our artists as we can hang on the walls. It is a slow, painstaking process, taking into account the color, subject matter, and size of each piece. More important is how the pieces relate to each other. In addition to a large assortment of 2-dimensional pieces including, oil, acrylic, pastel and watercolor, we also have a wonderful selection of sculpture, glass, and textile.

New Artists

One of the most exciting parts of putting together a new show is receiving new work from artists. For "Looking In/Looking Out", we have new pieces from several artists, including Cameron Bennett, Anthony D'Allesandro and his wife Lesley Campbell, Kate Doyle, returning artist Ed Hicks, John O'Shaughnessy, Gail Sauter, and Andrea Sawyer.

Cameron Bennett's quietly meditative piece "Shadow Light, Melody" emphasizes his classic technique and the precision of his characterizations. Kate Doyle is using charcoal and pastel, a new medium for us to have from her. Her pieces always engage the viewer in an ongoing dialogue. Perennial favorite Gail Sauter has given us a few of her water pieces. Andrea Sawyer's color palette emphasize the hard-edged shadows of her beach pieces.

"The eye is the window to the soul." The theme for the current show at Art 3 Gallery is "Looking In/Looking Out". Private spaces, private places - we asked our artists to recreate what they see when they peer in a window, open a door, visualize within the confines of their own head.
It is always fun to put together a group show at Art 3. We have an eclectic group of artists resulting in a wide range of artwork, from landscapes and still-lifes to abstract and multi-media pieces. Paintings in oil, acrylic, watercolor and pastel are showcased along with sculptures in metal, wood, and fabric.
For this show we have several new artists including Lincoln Perry, Rosemary Ladd, Jody Wright, and Cheri Dennett. Each artist adds a unique touch to our collection. Judith Shah has changed direction and sent us some great abstract paintings. We received several new pieces Ann Legg, Cynthia Niederheilman, John Sirois, Robert Collier, Dorine Gross, Edie Green, Olga Gernovski, Kate Doyle, Dustan Knight, Dennis Perrin, Pat Schappler, Frankie Tolman, Andrea Sawyer, Joyce Kingman, Ed Hicks, and Stan Moeller.

Who's the Fairest of Them All?

Mirrors aren't just for checking your hair as you run out of the house in the morning. When thoughfully added to a room design, a framed mirror has the ability to change the overall look and feel of a room. At Art 3 Gallery we get excited about your vision; come into the gallery and see how we can complete the look you've been imagining. Here are some tips that may entice you to purchase a custom-framed mirror.
1. Be Creative
Mirrors belong in any and every room. A mirror in a dark hallway or narrow stairwell will lighten the space and open it up.
2. Lighten Up
Bring some light into a dark room with a mirror hung to reflect the out-of-doors - a beautiful sunrise or sunset, a lovely view of trees or a garden in bloom.
3. Expand Your Space
Mirrors can give a room a feeling of depth. A small dining or sitting room can be visually enlarged very easily with a perfectly placed framed mirror.
4. Group Up
If a large mirror isn't your thing, how about using a grouping of several smaller mirrors. It's not important to match the surroundings or each other. At Art 3, we are experts at hanging multiple pieces.
5. What's Showing?
Hang a framed mirror to reflect something on the opposite wall - a piece of framed artwork will do double duty.

Three Rules of Thumb when hanging artwork:

1. A piece of art, its matboard and frame, should all be coordinated with their surroundings.

2. A successful grouping of artwork involves pieces that have some sort of similarity to tie them into a unified arrangement.

3. If art is hung in a space where it is exposed to direct sunlight, over time, the art as well as the matting will fade. The best way to protect the picture is to frame it with UV treated glass.

It's Not Spring Yet

As art consultants we are constantly on-the-go taking artwork to clients' business offices and/or residences. Winter is not over and today it is snowing and raining, sometimes both at the same time. So that the work we carry is not damaged by the elements, we rely on Tranzporter products. The portfolio cases are perfect for framed pieces as well as unframed pieces of art. But What Does It Mean?

Etchings and lithographs usually have a series of markings and numbers on them, but what exactly do these mean?
AP - this mark stands for "Artist's Proof", a few prints that the artist might make for his own collections or to finalize color choices and double-check registration marks.
Edition - the total number of prints made of an image. The print will usually be marked with two numbers separated with a slash, such as "12/35". The first number represents the print's place in the series, the second number represents the total number of prints in the edition.
Limited Edition - some artists produce only a certain number of prints and then destroy the plate used. Purchasing a piece from a limited edition is best.
Signed and numbered - an artist will sign each piece in pencil and attach an edition number. The print's number should not affect its quality although some people like to purchase pieces with low edition numbers.
State - while the artist is pulling proofs of a print, he may make alterations which change the plate. Each time a plate is changed, it is said to be in a "state."

Why Don't You Come Up and See My Etchings?

An etching begins when a zinc or copper plate is covered with an acid-resistant coating of wax. If the wax is hard, the artist gently scrtaches a drawing into the wax with steel needles, exposing the metal plate underneath. If the wax is soft, the artist first lays a piece of paper over the wax and then creates impressions in the wax with soft pressure on the paper.
When the drawing is completed, the metal plate is immersed in an acid bath. The areas covered by wax are protected but the scratched or pressed areas are eaten away by the acid, leaving behind incised lines. The wax is then removed from the plate, leaving a clean, smooth surface with a series of fine lines and designs throughout. Ink is applied to the plate and then wiped clean. Only the etched design contains ink at this point. Placed on the printing press face up, the plate is ready for printing. A dampened sheet of paper is applied to the plate, topped by a layer of felt blankets. The "sandwich" is then pressed and the ink is transferred to the paper. Each print requires a fresh inking of the plate although the drawing is only made once.

The Art of Collecting Art - Part 1

Art 3 Gallery is a retail art gallery and we are in the business of selling art. If you are a first time buyer or an experienced collector, there are still things to know before buying a piece of artwork.

Decide why you're buying artwork - are you interested in starting (or adding to) a collection of work by major (collectible) artists or are you looking for something that goes with the sofa?
Educate yourself by reading art magazines, art history books, books about collecting, and checking internet resources with regards to pricing.
There is an old adage regarding art work "Purchase what you love." There's no guarantee that what you buy today will increase in price so that you can sell it and retire on the proceeds. (And your kids may not like it either.)
Visit art galleries in your home town and when you're on vacation. Although intimidating to some people, galleries want your business, so feel free to ask questions about what you're seeing.

Caring for Art

Buying original artwork is not only a unique and satisfying experience, but also an investment that requires some care to ensure its preservation, longevity, and value. Whether you own art, are thinking of beginning to collect, or just have an appreciation, these points will prove useful. There are many factors, seemingly benign, that can affect the life of a work of art. Here are a few of the more important ones:
Humidity - A relative humidity of 50% is most beneficial for any type of artwork. A dry environment (45% or below) will accelerate deterioration and aging, while a more humid environment (65% or higher) will proliferate mold and mildew.
Temperature - Avoid extreme shifts in temperature. Ideally the environment where art is stored or displayed should stay with the 68 to 72 degree range.
Heat & Light - Light, both natural and artificial, creates heat which can be damaging. Illumination should not be excessive nor should any work of art be placed in direct sunlight. Avoid hanging works near windows, heating vents, or radiators.
Framing Works on Paper - Works on paper include prints, watercolors, drawing, pastels, and photographs. Always separate the art from the glass by an acid-free matboard or spacers. This will prevent mold and stainging damage which can be created by condensation on the inner side of the glass.

One way to add color to our lives right now is to update a room with paint and new fabric. Another way to add color to our lives is with artwork. At Art 3 Gallery we work with several designers who are expert at choosing color, furnishings and accessories to complement your home and life style. Below is a brief overview of how an artist might use color:

Decorative color tends to provide a pleasing background for daily life. Decorative colors are chosen for their stylistic properties and are often flat in nature, meaning there is little or no modulation of tone.

Realistic color forms a natural record of life, depicting things as our eyes would perceive them. These colors tend to be literal and descriptive, utilizing a range of tomes to create the illusion of three dimensions.

Symbolic color moves away from realism with the aim being to express feelings and ideas about the narrative of an artwork. Color then becomes a symbol for allusions, emotions, thoughts, etc.

Impressionistic color can be described as realistic color reinterpreted. Often pure colors are juxtaposed on the surface - rather than mixed on a palette - where the eye mixes them visually.

Abstract color has no agenda to render appearances as they are witnessed, therefore colors are chosen to create visual movement, space, form, or dynamic relarionships.

In any style of art, color is of primary importance, and it is vital to recognize that none of these applications of color are mutually exclusive. Often within a single artwork, several modes of color will exist. Some colors will dominate, thus influencing the overall effect of the piece.
